The marine ecosystem is increasingly stressed by anthropogenic changes in the earth system. Models and proxy data suggest multi-centennial nutrient and biological productivity changes under sustained climate warming. We show that transient adjustments of the overturning circulation, involving interactions between the Atlantic and the Indo-Pacific, dominates the global redistribution of nutrients on centennial timescales and contributes to a long-term decline of global biological productivity in a warming climate. Similar processes may have also contributed to past climate and carbon cycle changes during the glacial period.
